Permalink: Broadband Phone VS. Landline Phone
July 4th, 2008The most relevant case for using broadband phone over landline phone is cost, and features. Broadband phone is normally about half the cost of traditional landline service with unlimited local and long distance, plus a ton of features all added at not cost. The landline companies charge you for this. For those of you who are just now thinking about getting a broadband phone line, it is also referred to as Voip, or Internet phone service, with the most well known provider being Vonage.
Don’t confuse Voip with real broadband phone service though. You see, Voip is an abbreviation for a technology that allows us to send voice messages over the Internet. Voice over Internet Protocol. Messengers like Yahoo, Skype, and MSN also take advantage of this technology, but you have to use a computer with a headset and microphone, not a real telephone.
With broadband telephone service you can use a real phone to make, and receive phone calls. Chances are, you can use the phone you already have. You’ll only need to plug it into a broadband phone router which will be supplied as part of your package when you sign up for service. You can use it over both dsl, or cable Internet, so long as you have some sort of broadband Internet.
I’m not so sure broadband phone is necessarily better than landline, but is sure is a whole lot cheaper. As far as recommendations go, I’ll have to go with Packet8 on that one. I’ve had Packet8 for going on three years now, and I have no complaints. Customer service has been great to me, and so has my call quality. I love the features like, Find Me Follow Me call forwarding, or simultaneous ring to another number (my cell).
